Remember how I mentioned that I left my kids and met up with my world traveling husband for a few days in Hawaii a few weekends ago? Well, we are back, and since I mentioned the stress of leaving my kids for the first time, I thought I'd better tell you that the trip was heavenly.
It's true what they say, that the first few days (or first day in my case) you worry and wonder about your children, and then somehow you remember how to relax and enjoy just being with your spouse again. We did miss our children, but mostly in the form of, oh how fun it would be to share this with them. Someday, we hope!
Jimmy termed the first day of our trip as the "Hawaiian Dream Day". It included a breathtaking hike, banana macadamia nut pancakes, Dole Whip from the Dole plantation, the North Shore, Matsumoto Shave Ice and an afternoon on the beach. Really, did we miss anything on the first day? I termed the entire trip our "Hawaiian Dream Date."
Due to the circumstances of this busy part of his career, the trip fit perfectly for our five-year anniversary celebration. Our anniversary is actually three days before Christmas, and we've never been great at celebrating, so I'll take it. We are now dreaming of a ten-year celebration. Jimmy says London, and I'm all for that. I guess we'll just have to see where life has taken us at that point.
Now for a little business.
I hope you don't mind if the subject matter sways just a bit from "mamas who know", but I thought I'd ask your opinion. My husband has a short list of residency programs that he is interested in. At the top of that list lies two very distinct locations...Honolulu, HI and Seattle, WA. Of course there are a ton of other factors that go into the decision, but based on location alone, where would you choose, and why?
Just wondering.

That is a tough one! On the one hand, you get a chance to live in Hawaii!! Eat Matsumoto's everyday if you like! Play at the beach and dream weather all year round.
Really the only thing I'd think Washington has going for it against Hawaii is the fact that you could drive to see family. And that is pretty big.
It will be interesting to see where you guys go!
Ha, you definitely know my answer. Hawaii all the way! We just found out that we'll be here until summer of 2012 too and I could not be more thrilled! When does Jimmy's residency start? Hawaii has been amazing for us and I really think you would love it too. I haven't been to WA yet but I have heard good things about it so really, it's a win-win situation at this point. Good luck! It was great seeing you guys!
I lived in Kailua, Hawaii in '86-87, and Port Orchard, Washington from '97-99 {Port Orchard is almost directly west across the sound from Seattle}...
I pick Hawaii, but not for the obvious reasons. I've lived in quite a few places in my 42 years of living, and I can say without a doubt that when it comes to the church and its members, Hawaii is a very special place with a very special spirit. For that reason alone, I'd pick Honolulu over Seattle.
{oops...I just realized that I broke the rule of basing this on location alone. Hawaii would still be my pick in that case}
p.s...
THANK YOU for your beautiful blog!
We LOVED our years in the great Northwest. We were in Portland, but Seattle is similar in many ways. That gets my vote!
You don't know me, but if you move to O'ahu, I promise we'd be pals. If Honolulu is a real consideration, email me and I'll give you the insider's scoop. We've lived (are living here) three separate times. Baby #1 was our very own souvenier the second time we called Hawaii home. If you want info, I'm the girl in the know! Not to brag or anything, but a girls got to have one claim to fame. PS- Mastumotos...yuck. Come again to Hawaii and we'll tell you the best place to get shave ice!
Thanks to all of you for your insights and vote. Honestly, we should probably just put it at a vote--that's how torn we are right now.
I may be e-mailing a few of you for some advice...thanks.
I think I see both areas being really great! The cost of flying to and from Hawaii would be difficult, I think. But, you also get a one time chance to live in Hawaii (is residency 4-5 years?)
I'm curious what he wants to specialize in...would it be Honolulu or the North Shore?
I actually think that is a really tough decision. I've heard GOOD things about both (and lived in Hawaii in college for one year:)
I'm sorry I am not much help!
Missy, Jimmy is going into orthopedics, so that is a five year residency. We feel the same about either location although I would be pretty nervous about the gloominess of Seattle.
We'll see!
I think I would worry about that as well. Once you are finished could you move somewhere else or do you usually set up practice where you do residency?
I think my vote is Hawaii! Am I getting too into this voting?? :)
Oh, we have plenty of time to live elsewhere and I'm sure we'll end up somewhere in the west when all is said and done.
No, you are totally not too into this..we need serious help!
ok.. so you have no idea who I am.. and I just found your blog a few weeks ago... BUT... I am going to share my opinion.. because I have been in your same position... not exactly, but close enough.
My husband had a choice of going to Seattle or Florida for his residency. All our family is in California.. so Seattle was a much easier location... BUT, we chose Florida.. mostly because it was a better program... BUT.. after living there, I was so grateful to have had the experience. It was SO worth living somewhere for a short amount of time.. that I would never have lived otherwise.
Now when we go back and visit.. it is so wonderful. It feels a little like home... its really fun.
Just think how fun it would be... years after you have left Hawaii... to go back for vacation.. and have stories to tell all your children...
No brainer.
I say Seattle, but that's because I'm biased. We've lived in Seattle for 5 years and really like it. I don't know very much about the hospitals. I know Swedish Hospital downtown is a pretty good one. The weather is a downside in the winter. Hawaii would be fun. But it's a pretty expensive place. Good luck!
